At a ceremony on January 10, 2019, held at the Cooper Auditorium at City of Hope (COH) in Duarte, CA, Joyce C. Niland, Ph.D. became one of the three newest inductees to the Scientific Research Portrait Gallery. This auspicious honor is given to those investigators that have devoted their careers to the advancement of science at COH. Dr. Niland is the Department Chair of the Diabetes & Cancer Discovery Science at City of Hope, a Full Professor in the Beckman Research Institute, an adjunct Professor in the USC Keck School of Medicine, holder of the first Edward & Estelle Alexander Endowed Chair and brings over 30 years of experience and 193 publications in biostatistics, biomedical informatics, system development and deployment, and collaboration in translational research.

Joyce Niland is Endowed Professor and Chair, Department of Diabetes and Cancer Discovery Science. She founded the Department of Information Sciences (1997-2017), and served as City of Hope’s first Clinical Research Information Officer. Dr. Niland was biostatistician for over 120 clinical trials, and created numerous informatics systems to support the conduct and safety of clinical research. Her work established City of Hope’s outstanding reputation in biomedical informatics/biostatistics, and as an Associate Director she contributed to achieving cancer center comprehensive status. Dr. Niland has been awarded 24 competitive grants/contracts to support national/international cancer, stem cell, and diabetes research, totaling over $90 million.
